Safe Zone Workshops

Safe Zone is a symbol of the University of California, Irvine ’s commitment to diversity and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community on campus. Open to any campus affiliate, the program trains individuals to identify as Allies that are informed, supportive, and affirming of the LGBTQA community at UC Irvine. Safe Zone creates a more welcoming campus climate for LGBTQ and Ally faculty, staff, and students. Sponsored by the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center, the program fosters a community network that embraces sexual and gender diversity.

Goals

  • Develop individual knowledge regarding LGBTQQIA+ issues, concerns, and scenarios and how to deal with them in a responsible and non-threatening method
  • Identify Safe Spaces and Allies for the LGBTQQIA+ Community at UCI
  • Provide Awareness and Education about the LGBTQQIA+ Community at UCI, that will empower Allies and transform the campus climate to better support UCI’s LGBTQQIA+ population
  • Establish a Social, Supportive, and Visible network of Allies
  • Provide Resources from campus, local, and statewide agencies related to the LGBTQQIA+ Community

Speaker's Bureau Workshops

The Speakers Bureau is composed of a group of trained speakers who share their personal journeys as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or ally individuals on panel presentations. Educational workshops are designed and delivered by peer counselors, focusing on a range of LGBTQ+/Ally issues, or on a specific topic that is usually requested. Through lecture, discussion, panel presentations or interactive exercises, workshops are able to open up dialogue within an audience, helping participants to examine and assess their previous knowledge of LGBTQ+ issues.Audiences are encouraged to ask questions to get an idea of some of the emotions, struggles or accomplishments involved in the LGBT/Ally student or staff member's life. Panels are often presented at the conclusions of workshops, which are offered with a number of additional services.

Goals

  • Workshops and panels are geared towards creating a greater understanding of the LGBT community, and are available for academic classes, residence halls, cultural clubs and other campus organizations
